In the heat of the summer tea might not be the first thing on our mind. But fresh teas made from your own herbs is one of the healthy and refreshing treats you can create from garden to kitchen.

Herb Gathering
First, gather all the herbs you like that grow in your garden. Take a moment to stroll through your garden, observing the vibrant greenery and the various scents that fill the air. Pay special attention to the different herbs that you have cultivated, whether they are the familiar basil with its sweet aroma, the pungent and earthy rosemary, or the refreshing and zesty mint. As you walk, consider which herbs you find most appealing and which ones you often use in your cooking or for medicinal purposes. Once you have made your selections, carefully harvest them by snipping the stems with clean, sharp scissors or garden shears to ensure that you do not damage the plants. Aim to pick the leaves early in the morning when they are at their most fragrant and flavorful, as this is when the essential oils are most concentrated. Be mindful to leave enough of the plant intact so that it can continue to grow and thrive throughout the season. After gathering your herbs, you may want to rinse them gently under cool water to remove any dirt or insects, then pat them dry with a clean towel. This will prepare them for whatever culinary or crafting endeavors you have in mind, whether it’s creating a fresh herb salad, infusing oils, or drying them for later use. The process of gathering herbs not only provides you with fresh ingredients but also connects you to the natural world and the fruits of your labor.
Here are some of our favorites:
chamomile flowers
calendula flowers
lemon balm
peppermint
catnip
beebalm leaves and flowers
tulsi (holy basil)
thyme
sage
yarrow
yellow & red clover flowers

You can mix and match whichever herbs you have available and whichever you prefer in taste. Some herbs like yarrow are more bitter and you might only want to use a little. Whereas chamomile or lemon balm suite most people's taste very much, so you can use these herbs in higher quantities.
Herbal Tea Blending TIPS
When it comes to blending the most flavorful tea mixtures, it is often observed that the most successful combinations consist of either 3 or 5 ingredients. This balanced approach allows for a harmonious blending of flavors without overwhelming your taste buds. For instance, a combination of chamomile, lemon balm, and tulsi creates a wonderfully calming and refreshing tea that also offers various health benefits.
🌸 Chamomile is renowned for its calming properties, making it an excellent choice for relaxation. Traditionally used as a natural remedy for anxiety and insomnia, chamomile contains compounds like apigenin that promote restful sleep and soothe the nervous system. It’s also known for its gentle anti-inflammatory and digestive benefits, helping to ease bloating and stomach discomfort.
🌸 Lemon Balm adds a subtle citrusy note that enhances the overall flavor profile, but its benefits go far beyond taste. This herb is often used to lift the mood and promote mental clarity while reducing stress and mild anxiety. Rich in antioxidants, lemon balm can also support cognitive health and may even aid in digestion by calming the gut.
🌸 Tulsi, or holy basil, brings a hint of spice and is celebrated for its adaptogenic qualities, which help the body manage stress and restore balance. In Ayurvedic tradition, tulsi is considered a sacred plant that strengthens immunity, supports respiratory health, and protects against oxidative stress. Its invigorating yet grounding properties make it a true ally for overall well-being.
To enjoy this calming blend to its fullest, you can prepare the tea by steeping these ingredients together in hot water for 20 minutes, allowing the flavors and medicinal properties infuse into the water. Once brewed, you can let the tea cool down to room temperature, or if you prefer a refreshing twist, you can pour it over ice. Adding a slice of fresh lemon, leaves of mint or lemon balm not only elevates the visual appeal of the drink but also infuses it with an extra zing of flavor. This iced tea is perfect for warm days, providing a soothing yet revitalizing experience. So good and refreshing, this tea mixture serves as an ideal companion for afternoon gatherings, picnics, or simply as a personal treat to enjoy while unwinding at home.
Teas are not only meant for winter days. Enjoy the healing powers of nature all year long.
Happy Gardening!
