Creating your own herbal oils is more than a kitchen task—it’s a mindful, intentional ritual that connects you to the plants, the season, and your own wellbeing. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to craft a natural healing or culinary tool that you’ll treasure all year.
Why Make Your Own Herbal Oil Infusion?
Store-bought oils are convenient, but homemade herbal oil infusions are intentional, personal, and powerful. You choose the herbs, the base oil, and the purpose—whether for cooking, massage, minor wounds, or muscle relief.
What You’ll Need:
Dried herbs (never fresh—fresh herbs can introduce mold). Calendula, chamomile, and rosemary are classic choices, but you can explore others from your garden.
High-quality oil: olive oil, grape seed oil, or another gentle, edible oil.
A clean glass jar or bottle.
How to Infuse:
There are two simple methods:
1. Warm Infusion (Faster)
Place dried herbs in a clean jar.
Cover with your chosen oil, fully submerging the herbs.
Place the jar in a warm spot (like a sunny windowsill) for several hours or up to a few days, checking occasionally.
Strain the herbs and pour the oil into a clean bottle.
2. Cold Infusion (Slow & Gentle)
Fill a jar with dried herbs and cover with oil.
Seal tightly and store in a cool, dark place for 2–6 weeks, shaking gently every few days.
Strain and transfer to a clean bottle.
Tips:
Label your oils with the herbs and date.
Store in a cool, dark place to prolong shelf life.
Use for massage, cooking, or minor skin care.
Optional: Add a few drops of essential oil for extra scent or potency.
Making your own herbal oil is an act of earned calm—slow, intentional, and rewarding. It’s a beautiful way to bring the garden indoors, even in winter, and connect with the natural healing power of plants.
